The magical unicorn said goodbye on Wednesday’s installment of The Masked Singer. Here, the voice behind the mask — the incomparable Tori Spelling! — talks about why she broke into tears and how crazy it was that her friend Jenny McCarthy never recognized her voice.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY You were really tearing up! Was it what judge Ken Jeong said, that you were his sentimental favorite?
TORI SPELLING: The whole experience for me was a completely emotional experience, this emotional journey from beginning to end. I was very flattered by what Ken said but it was the whole thing. Honestly, I said no to the show three times and it kept coming back around. I only said no because two of my biggest fears are performing in front of people and singing. When I heard it was both of those, I said no. So sorry! Then after three times, I said, “Okay, something here is meant to be.” Here I am, the mother of five, two of them being female, trying to show them how you can be who you want to be. I grew up fearful, that’s who I am. I don’t want to instill that, that if it scares you don’t do it. And when I got there, oh my God it was so much scarier than I thought it would be. But how much I grew as a human being through the process! It was amazing.
Let’s talk about your choice of costume. Why did you pick the unicorn?
Actually, the unicorn was not one of them. I said to them, “You can totally say no but would you ever consider doing a unicorn?” That is my spirit animal. I’m a unicorn mom, unicorns are magical and can be anything they want to be. That’s what I try to show my kids. They created the unicorn ice queen.
How was that thing to wear?
I did say to myself, “Why did I choose the unicorn?” It had the least amount of mobility, and I could not see anything. They literally walked me out on stage and placed me there. I couldn’t see where I was going. I thought, “Oh great, why would I do this? I can’t sing, and now I can’t move at all.”
Can you talk about your song choices?
“Fight Song” was my song choice. I sing that with my kids and it speaks to me on a deep leveI. I have the cutest video of four of my kids in Mexico with the phone blasting “I love it” while we are singing and jumping on a bed. I remembered that moment with my kids.
What did you think of some of the guesses about your identity?
I heard Denise Richards, Lauren Conrad, the gymnast. This is how little anyone knew. I didn’t know the host or judges until I showed up. I’ve been friends with Jenny McCarthy, so as soon as I saw her, I thought, Oh my God, for sure I can’t do this.
Do you have any suspicions about the remaining singers?
I definitely have suspicions but no one knows for sure. Last week with Margaret Cho, I was like, oh my God, I literally had no idea. Once we get on set, we have sweatshirts that say “Don’t talk to me.” We weren’t allowed to talk to crew members or anything. It felt so isolated, which was really scary. I’m a people person. I wanted to share the experience.
Who do you predict?
The lion has an amazing voice, she is so talented. I feel like the peacock is very solid as well.
When are you coming back to TV next?
Well, we’re doing a new version of 90210 in the same format. That’s confirmed! [CBS TV Studios is shopping another reboot of the 1990s franchise with participation from Spelling, Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green, and Gabrielle Carteris.]
How did you feel about Lifetime remaking your classic TV movie A Friend to Die For [as Death of a Cheerleader]?
I didn’t even know it was happening until the press release came out!
What one of your classic Lifetime movies should they remake next?
I would love to remake “Co-ed Call Girl” for the title alone. Now I can be the madam instead of the call girl.
