Onlookers are often left speechless by the Spanish midfielder’s talent on the field – but it is Suarez who tends to be lost for words off it.
That is according to best friend and former Barcelona B team-mate Edu Bedia who was “shocked” when an incredibly shy Suarez arrived at the Camp Nou in 2013.
Bedia, 29, told SunSport: “It was a big signing when Barca bought Denis from Man City because it was a huge investment for the future.
“But it was a shock to us because, for a player that was living abroad in Manchester for that many years, he was a very shy person. He barely talked with anyone at the beginning.
“He’s still shy and whenever he moves to a new club, he’s a reserved guy.”
Yet, on the field Suarez let his feet do the talking and the boy inspired by Xavi and Andres Iniesta made himself heard.
FC Goa’s midfielder Bedia said: “What stood out to me was the difference between off the pitch and on the pitch. He was an incredibly shy person but you cannot imagine his strong character on the field.
“We could see he had something different to the other players and he fit the Barca style of play perfectly, with his passing and possession of the ball. He was above the rest of our team-mates.”
In North London, the 25-year-old will be reunited with Unai Emery, with whom he won the Europa League at Sevilla in 2015.
Working for Emery again would have been one of the main pulls for Suarez who, Bedia says, credits the Arsenal boss with igniting his career.
He explained: “Denis told me that Emery was the coach who managed to get the best out of him.
“That season was a huge success because they won the Europa League and I think that was one of the best seasons that helped him move back to Barcelona’s first-team.
“The confidence that Emery gave to Denis was huge, he trusted a very young player and Denis paid him back with great performances.
“Emery teams show strong character and keep possession, so Denis will fit in perfectly.
“Denis needs the opportunity and confidence of a top coach in Europe, and only then will we see his true potential.”
Bedia remembers how he and Suarez idolised Xavi and Iniesta, but it was another Spaniard who aided the midfielder’s progress during his time in England.
He said: “Denis used to say the English culture was very different from Spanish but he had good memories from that time and had some people that really helped him out like David Silva.
“Denis was very proud of being part of Man City. Apart from his first club, Celta Vigo, Manchester City was the club where he was brought up as a football player.
“When he came to Barca B, he came as a very mature player because of his time in Manchester.”
Yet, Suarez’s new team-mates may have to tear the midfielder away from the mirror as Bedia remembers the love of his locks.
Laughing, Bedia recalls: “There was an interview we did together at Barcelona and Denis was asked for one thing he could never be without in his house.
“He replies: ‘Shampoo’. At that time, he was he was a bit obsessed with his hairstyle.”
Arsenal will certainly hope they have a new hairo.
