It's taken six years and four bosses, Man Utd have finally realised Fellaini is not good enough

Permission has been given for the Belgium international to have talks with Chinese Super League side Shandong Luneng.

The midfielder more than any other player has been the on-pitch symbol of what has gone wrong at Old Trafford since Sir Alex stepped down.

David Moyes at least admitted privately that he only bought him for the muck and bullets games like Stoke away on a Monday night.

Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho instead paid lip service to the impact he could have on the United team.

He certainly did that, but not quite in the way the fans had hoped.

The fact he somehow made it to 177 appearances tells you how far removed United had gone from the style of play implemented at the club under Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Amazingly seven months ago Mourinho persuaded the club to hand Fellaini a new two-year deal, one they now aim to cash in on.

Fellaini has played just 31 minutes in two substitute appearances against Cardiff and Reading under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has made it quite clear he does not fit into the way he wants to play.

His first-choice midfield-three are Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.

Even Fred has more hope of breaking that up.

Some Red Devils fans would argue even Wilma has, than Fellaini.

He has been out of action with a calf injury since the middle of this month.

On revealing this problem Solskjaer said: “He’s got a calf problem and that’s sad because there’s X factors in different players and we all know Felli’s X factor.”

He did not elaborate on what that X factor was but instead has gone for the red buzzer.

There is no great rush to get the deal done before the end of this month as the Chinese transfer window does not close until February 28th.

But Fellaini was at Carrington this lunchtime ahead of the rest of the squad’s preparations for the evening kick off with Burnley to discuss the move.
