Celebs Swear by the Keto Diet to Burn Fat: Here’s Why It Works

If it seems you know a dozen people on the keto diet, there’s a good reason: It really does work to burn fat. Which is why celebs have turned to it in droves! Vanessa Hudgens Opens a New Window. , Alicia Vikander Opens a New Window. and Halle Berry are just a few fit stars who have gotten on the keto bandwagon.

In general, people love fad diets because they promise extreme weight loss quickly. The problem is, they can also be unhealthy (hello, Atkins) or lead you to gain pounds back afterwards (we’re looking at you, juice detox). But as Hollywood stars have increasingly turned away from quick-fix diets in favor of healthier eating as a lifestyle, the keto diet has soared in popularity.

The keto, or ketogenic, diet is basically a high-fat, low-carb eating plan where the emphasis is on consuming healthy, clean fats that the body can process for energy. Think: olives, nuts, fish, coconut oil and avocado (all things that have been linked to other benefits including everything from brain health to smoother skin). “With a keto diet, the person is hoping to be in ketosis where their body is using stored fat,” NYC-based dietitian Keri Glassman tells Us. Put another way: “When the body reaches a ketogenic state, it turns to stored fat for energy.”

As someone with Type 1 diabetes, the seemingly ageless star has always been focused on keeping her diet healthy and clean. But the funny thing about Berry and the keto diet, her trainer Peter Lee Thomas told Us in October 2018, is that she had been doing it for years without knowing! “When I looked at what she was eating I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. You’re totally doing this ketogenic diet which is really hot right now,’” said the pro. “And she was like, ‘Woah, what’s that?’ So when we looked into it, she and I both were perplexed that she was already doing that and she was already in ketosis.”
