The character had been convinced for weeks that someone was watching her, and realised they'd broken into the flat she shares with Rita Sullivan and looked through her bag in tonight's episode.
Later, as she headed home, Chesney Brown spotted a man in a hoody following her, and pounced on him as he tried to get through the door behind Gemma.
As Chesney pinned the stalker to the ground, he pulled back the hoody and asked Gemma if she recognised him.
Nodding, Gemma said: "Yes, it's my twin brother Paul".
The revelation left many viewers at home baffled, as they were convinced Gemma has never mentioned having a brother let alone a twin.
Taking to Twitter, one wrote: "Twin? You having a larf?" while another added: "And yet another character appears from nowhere! Gemma' s suddenly got a twin brother!"
A third agreed, writing: "I didn't know that Gemma was a twin!" while a fourth tweeted: "Gemma never mentioned that she was a twin."
The second edition of tonight's double bill revealed that Paul used to call Gemma 'Gizmo' as they were growing up, and he was born 10 minutes before her.
As Gemma told him to leave Weatherfield as she wanted nothing to do with him, Paul informed her that would be tricky, as he'd just landed a job at the factory.
Viewers first met Paul – played by former Footballer's Wives actor Peter Ash – last year when he was David Platt's former cellmate.
David (Jack P Shepherd) and Paul got off on the wrong foot when David – who was still traumatised after being raped by Josh Tucker – insisted he didn’t want a cellmate.
David also ended up slamming Paul up against a wall when he tried to wake him up and inadvertently caused David to have a flashback of the sexual assault.
