Two ten track albums, titled Have Your Way and Back Up, Rewind, were uploaded under the name Queen Carter on both Spotify and Apple music yesterday.
Their appearance sent fans into a frenzy, believing they were brand new offerings – but on closer inspection it was clear they were in fact unauthorised compilations of old songs.
For example the song Back Up was listed – this was a bonus track on Beyonce’s 2006 album B’Day.
Twerk was in fact a Destiny’s Child song, originally called Twirk, which never got released.
Taking to Twitter to discuss the situation, one fan wrote: “Now listen… y’all know y’all can’t play with Beyoncé. Is it new music or no?”
Another excited person tweeted: “Beyoncé dropped her new music then took most of it away ! Ahhh I’m so excited she’s got new music on the wayyyy.”
While someone else was less convinced, writing: “Y’all really thought Beyoncé released new music on Apple? Newbies.”
It’s not the first time that Beyonce has broken the internet – in 2013 she dropped a surprise album on iTunes called Beyonce, without any warning at all.
The mum-of-three said at the time: "I didn't want to release my music the way I've done it.
"I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There's so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans.
“I felt like I didn't want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready and from me to my fans."
Beyonce and her husband Jay Z released their album Everything Is Love in June 2018.
