Over nine million Brits will be shunning a traditional Christmas at home and will spend the festive season abroad on holiday, new research has revealed.
A study has found the most popular destination for those taking a Christmas break is the United States followed by Thailand, then Australia.
And out of those going abroad for the festive period, over a quarter will be spending time with family overseas while one in six are planning to spend Christmas Day itself relaxing by the pool or lapping up the sun on an exotic beach.

The research was carried out by travel booking firm Expedia, which analysed its booking data over the Christmas period.
Also proving popular with Brits is India, which will be the fourth most visited destination, while in fifth place is the United Arab Emirates.
The rest of the top ten is made up of Morocco (sixth), Japan (seventh), Vietnam (eighth), New Zealand (ninth) and Canada (10th).

Out of those surveyed who are heading to the US and Australia, they are primarily travelling to be with family and loved ones (30 per cent and 36 per cent respectively).
However, nearly a fifth (19 per cent) of those jetting off to Thailand will be taking the opportunity to explore the country solo.
Meanwhile almost a third (28 per cent) of Brits admitted that they would consider going away for Christmas just to get a tan to see them through the winter months, and one in five (19 per cent) would take a Christmas holiday for the bragging rights on their social channels.
Almost a third (29 per cent) admitted it would be nice to jet off to avoid the Brexit blues to find a sunnier outlook overseas.

However, despite opting to spend Christmas abroad, most British holidaymakers say they’ll still miss their favourite festive traditions.
Spending time with family is what they’ll miss the most, according to the study (36 per cent agree) and somewhat ironically, a fifth (20 per cent) say they would miss the possibility of a white Christmas.
Work Christmas parties would be missed by only four per cent of Brits – trumped by seasonal treats like mince pies (10 per cent) and mulled wine (seven per cent).
Mark Tavender, director of product at Brand Expedia, said: ‘Christmas and New Year is a special time of year for Expedia customers, as we see many using the bank holidays to visit family, friends or simply get a great deal on a new destination to explore.
‘While far flung destinations are popular for Brits, we are delighted to be helping so many UK holidaymakers celebrate the season, either home or abroad.’
