Two Boca Juniors fans arrested for the brutal murder of a River Plate fan who was celebrating his team's Copa Libertadores win

Twenty-one-year-old Exequiel Aaron Neris was stabbed as he celebrated his team's historic victory and he told his mother as he lay dying: "They attacked me for celebrating the match."

Neris was on his way home in the city of Posadas in the Argentine province of Misiones minutes after watching River Plate claim the Copa title with a 3-1 second leg victory after extra time.

He was attacked and killed, and two Boca Juniors thugs have been arrested for the murder.

A shocking image shows Neris lying dead on the ground with blood seeping from his groin and local media reported that he was beaten and stabbed in the top of the leg.

The stab wound reportedly severed the femoral artery and Neris' family found him shortly after and rushed him to a local hospital in a police car.

He was taken into intensive care but died 12 hours later after five cardiopulmonary arrests.

Two suspects, 18 and 26, both believed to be Boca Juniors fans, have now been arrested on suspicion of murder and police are working on the basis Neris was killed for wearing his team's colours.

Police have found the suspected murder weapon, a knife, and blood stained clothing near the crime scene.

The victim's mother told reporters that her son had said: "They attacked me for celebrating the match, for being a River fan."

Lucia Ramona Neris added: "They killed my son, he was just walking, he had surgery and three nails in one leg after a motorcycle crash a few months ago.

"They attacked him even though he was hardly walking.

"They hurt him like a defenceless dog."

The investigation into the case is ongoing and it is unclear if the suspects have been charged.

The second leg had to be played in Madrid after it was twice postponed because of crowd trouble between rival sets of supporters.
