How stem cell treatment will help Barcelona star Luis Suarez recover from a knee injury in half the time

The Uruguayan striker has been suffering with an ongoing problem in his right knee and will have the pioneering treatment to ensure he only misses a few weeks of action.

The 31-year-old has been ruled out of the Spanish giants' Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven, but hopes to be back for their meeting with Tottenham on December 11.

Stem cell treatment is often used by athletes who require treatment of chronic pain, as it reduces their pain and speeds up recovery.

Although the treatment is thought to be less painful and enables the athlete to return to their sport quicker, it is a pricey procedure.

The treatment usually involves taking a sample of healthy cells from the star’s blood or bone marrow, which is then injected into the problem area to help speed up recovery.

The defending La Liga champions have had several tough games, with surprising results, and could do with Suarez not having a lengthy spell on the sideline.

The pioneering treatment worked effectively for Cristiano Ronaldo in the past, who seems to have returned to full fitness.

Rafael Nadal has also reportedly had stem cell treatment to help cure prolonged knee and back knee problems.

Back in 2014, the tennis star's Doctor said that stem cells were extracted from Nadal and then put in the point of pain, with the goal of regenerating cartilage, in the midterm, and producing an anti-inflammatory effect.
