Billie Piper returning to Doctor Who for standalone flashback adventures without the Time Lord

Actress Billie, 36, will voice the character in the audiobooks which will consist of a four-part story called Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon.

It is thought series fans will hear more about Rose’s time in Pete’s World, the parallel universe named after her father.

It is also hoped more will be learnt about her work done in Torchwood which was only mentioned to The Doctor in Doomsday.

The tales will focus heavily on Rose’s families with actress Camille Coduri and actor Shaun Dingwall bringing back the characters of Rose’s mother Jackie and her father Pete.

According to the Radio Times, Former pop star Billie said: “I love how normal Rose is, and yet really extraordinary. She lived a normal average life but she is incredibly curious and has an enormous capacity for love and empathy and is really spirited. She is extraordinary.”

On making the idea of the series work, producer David Richardson said: “I approached Russell T Davies with the idea of Big Finish making a Rose Tyler spin-off.

“He was very enthusiastic – as always – and suggested we followed Rose’s journey that ultimately leads to her finding the Doctor in The Stolen Earth…

“It’s rather dark (though never short on wit and charm) but it’s not really about villains. It focuses on the fight to survive against the odds, and on the power of family and love.”

Billie added: “That’s the great thing about Doctor Who. It challenges new-thinking. It’s progressive and it can be political in amongst these human emotions and relationships. I think that’s its greatest appeal.”

Doctor Who, Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon is released in September next year, 2019, and is available for pre-order now.
