Animal rights activists demand village of Wool change its name to Vegan Wool as they claim it backs 'sheep cruelty'

PETA director Elisa Allen says the animals can be hurt by shearing and are sometimes mistreated.

She asked the local parish council to change the name to Vegan Wool, which is made from plant-based or synthetic fibres.

But locals have ridiculed the plan, pointing out that the 1,000-year-old village takes its name from the Saxon word “welle”, meaning a water spring.

Councillor Cherry Brooks said: “It is a ridiculous request.

A few people are quite offended but most seem to find it amusing.”
