That’s the transfer rumour coming out of Italy today, as Gennaro Gattuso faces up to an injury crisis at the San Siro.
According to Corriere Dello Sport, Cahill is being considered by the Rossoneri boss as he has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge, appearing just once in the Premier League under Maurizio Sarri.
The former England defender is out of contract at the end of the season, and would relish the chance to continue playing regularly at the highest level.
That’s a possibility which now seems unlikely at Chelsea, with Antonio Rudiger and David Luiz currently the manager’s first choices, and with young Danish international Andreas Christensen in the wings.
It has been suggested that Cahill was weighing up a move to Aston Villa to link up with his old team mate John Terry – and return to the club where he started his career.
Further rumours suggest that former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is considering taking his ex-player to Manchester United to help shore up the Old Trafford club’s leaky defence.
But a move to Serie A would almost certainly tempt the 32-year-old abroad, as Milan attempt to maintain their push for a place in next season’s Champions League in the face of a growing injury list.
No less than three of their centre halves – skipper Alessio Romagnoli, Argentinian Mateo Musacchio and summer purchase Mattia Caldara – are sidelined at present, with Musacchio and Caldara both likely to be missing well into the new year.
Cahill would be a reliable short-term fix for Gattuso’s side, and one that would not be likely to break the bank.
He has had a glittering career at Chelsea, winning the Champions League, the Europa League, two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup with the Blues.
He also won 61 caps for England – the most recent at the World Cup in June – and captained the national side five times.
