Count Meribel almost falls after shocking mistake but manages to win at Cheltenham

He managed to get 4-1 shot Count Meribel home in front despite a shocking mistake at the second-last fence.

The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained chaser had barely put a foot wrong in the early stages of the Steel Plate And Sections Novices' Chase.

The six-year-old looked set to record a straightforward victory when rounding the home turn in a narrow lead under journeyman jockey Grant.

But he was almost thrown from the saddle two out as Count Meribel crashed into the fence, forcing the rider up in the air and onto the horses neck.

With Count Meribel also down on his nose, Grant somehow managed to get balanced and build up enough momentum to challenge again heading into the final fence.

The gelding produced a big leap and dug deep on the run-in to get the better of Le Breuil (10-1), with the 9-4 favourite Mr Whipped back in third.

It was a dramatic end to £25,000 race which also saw the 3-1 shot White Moon crash out at the last when in with a chance.

Both horse and jockey Robbie Power emerged unhurt.

A delighted Twiston-Davies said: “I think he is a very nice horse – well done to Mark Grant for hanging on!

"He is a lovely horse, and with a bit clearer round he might have won more easily."
