A drunken thug bit a policeman’s finger in an horrific attack caught on the officer’s bodycam.
Daniel Brearley was jailed for three years on Monday for the assault on the policeman, as well as glassing a friend in the face who was trying to calm him down.
West Yorkshire Police agreed to release the footage after a request from Examiner Live after the incident in Huddersfield.
The clip shows Brearley under arrest and restrained against a police car screaming obscenities at the two police officers at the scene.
He is heard to shout: "Have I spat?" before the sickening bite.
The court was told he had spat at officers in the past.
In the footage one officer has his hand on Brearley’s face before the suspect suddenly pushes up and bites down on the officer’s finger. The court heard the assault caused ‘immense pain’.
Brearley is then pushed to the floor by both officers, while the policeman wearing the bodycam can be heard shouting, ‘get off him now!’
The officer was still waiting for the all-clear from blood tests taken after the attack in August, Bradford Crown Court was told.
Brearley, of Old Mill Mews, Elland, pleaded guilty to wounding and assault.
He had 36 previous convictions for more than 60 offences on his record and at the time of the two attacks in August he was already subject to two community orders.
Judge Rose said Brearley had acted "like a savage" in biting the officer and custody could be the only outcome for those who attacked officers.
Brearley was jailed for 16 months for each attack with an additional four months imposed in place of the two community orders.
Chief constable Dee Collins, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “You join the police force to protect others from harm but unfortunately we are increasingly seeing frontline officers and staff subjected to violent attacks as they work to keep our communities safe.
“It is estimated that nationally a police officer is assaulted every four minutes. This is simply unacceptable. Being spat at, wrestled, hit and kicked should not be part of the day job.
“The uniform shouldn’t be seen as a reason to attack someone but, quite the opposite, it should be a reason not to.
"We strongly support the tougher sanctions that the ‘Protect the Protectors’ bill would put in place for those who attack police and other emergency services and urge MPs to give it their full support.”
After the incident the officer tweeted that his attacker was a Hepatitis C sufferer.
He said he would have to undergo treatment for three months and on Monday the court heard he had yet to hear whether he had been given the all clear.
