How desperate parents are getting their kids star roles in Nativity plays

Every parent would love to see their child performing centre stage in the school’s Christmas play – but competition for the lead role can be fierce.

Not only do children rival one another to land the top part, but parents also go to extreme lengths to make sure their little ones talents are recognised.

Just take a look at parenting forums, getting kids cast as the lead is a hotly debated subject – with some mums and dads even resorting to bribes.

One dad has confessed the lengths he is going to in a big to make sure his child got an important role in the Nativity play this year – and it includes buying the teacher presents.

He explained that last year his five year old got a decent part, but this year he wants to see his three year old centre stage.

Speaking to Mirror Online anonymously, he said: "Last year our daughter was given the role of pig in the Nativity.

"She was great but I’ll not lie, this time we are after Mary or the InnKeeper at minimum.

"Let’s hope all those presents to the teachers and attendance at the after school drama club pays off".

Parents have also recently been taking to social media to voice their competitiveness.

One mum wrote about her frustration that her child was cast as the camel when she wanted her to be the angel, complaining that the teacher "wouldn’t budge" as it would "set a precedent".

These accounts of parents getting competitive over the Nativity are backed up by recent research – which shows parents will go the extra mile to make sure their little ones don’t end up with "Narrator 4".

The school play is the single most competitive event for modern parents, according to a nationwide survey of British parents by Virgin TV.

Almost one in 20 have attempted to "suck up" to their child’s teacher to help land them a plum role, while two in 10 say they’ve spent hours making costumes to out do the competition.

As many one in ten said they splashed out for extra singing and dancing lessons for their little darlings, in a bid to give them the "edge" over other auditionees – which shows real determination.

When it comes to the biggest production of the year – the nativity play – over half of the parents polled said they are secretly "deeply disappointed" when their child misses out on a main part.

Virgin TV’s Christmas Stars competition could win your school a £5,000 prize.
