Game of Thrones director David Nutter teases 'shocking' final season that will see characters back at the beginning of their story

David Nutter, who directed the series' opening episode, was being quizzed in a session on Reddit about how it felt to direct the first episode of the final season when he teased fans with the shocking twist.

"I've never directed am opening episode of GOT before until season 8, but I think it's really important to make a splash," he answered.

"You have to reset the table, put everyone back in their place, you have to take them to their next position.

"But you have to entertain that's what's most important."

Although he did reveal that he was happy with how the season had turned out, saying: "I'm completely satisfied with how season eight ends.

“I think that [show creators] David [Benioff] and Dan [DB Weiss] did a tremendous job, and they took into consideration what the fans want, as well as what is right as far as storytelling is concerned.

“I guarantee there’s going to be lots of surprises and shocking moments, but it’s really very compelling stuff."

When quizzed on what the feeling was like on set knowing it was going to be the final season, David described the atmosphere as special.

He said: "Everyone saw it was coming to an end so there was a real family sensibility to it knowing that it was about to end — lot of tears, lot of sadness but it was very special."

However, despite the director revealing that he was not a big of spoilers when it came to the franchise, he did let fans into a little secret about multiple battles that could be expected in the final season.

"The White Walker army will not be the only issue our characters have to face in season 8, they have to also face each other," he spilled.

David then carried on to describe the season in three words: "Spectacular, Inspiring, Satisfying."

The final series will be the shortest in Game of Thrones' history with just six episodes, following on from the seven in season seven.

It seems very likely that each episode will be feature length but could range anywhere between 60-120 minutes in length.

But as Game of Thrones prepares to take a bow, HBO is already planning for the next incarnation of the series.

Over the summer, HBO confirmed a prequel series.

And earlier this month, the creator of Game of Thrones George RR Martin let slip the prequel will be called The Long Night.

So far only two stars have been announced as part of the cast, and they are Josh Whitehouse and Naomi Watts.

Creator George tweeted:  "Casting is now underway for The Long Night, the first of the Game of Thrones successor series to ordered to film.

"HBO has just announced the first cast member: Naomi Watts is coming on board as one of our stars… I could not be more excited. Welcome to Westeros, Naomi."
