Wilko, Sainsbury's, Boots and Asda were all found to sell men's toiletries sets that don't seem to be good value for shoppers, according to Channel 5 show Shop Smart, Save Money.
Researchers for the consumer TV show found that several shops are selling gift sets that are more expensive than buying the products included separately from the same stores.
Wilko sells a "Full Works" Nivea Men Gift Pack for £20 – but researchers found that the five products inside only cost £10.50 separately at the same store.
Many of the Nivea products included in the set – a shower gel (250ml), anti-perspirant (150ml), face wash (100ml), moisturiser (75ml) and post shave balm (100ml) – are currently on offer, so cost nearly half the price of the full set.
Wilko has since said that it will now reduce the price of its gift set after being contacted by The Sun.
In Boots, FCUK’s Sport Hair and Body Duo gift box will set you back £8.
But buying the two items of the same size included in the set – a FCUK Sport Hair and Bodywash (300ml) and FCUK Sport Bodyspray (200ml) – will cost half that at just £4 in the same store.
Meanwhile a Lynx Africa Collection gift box costs £4 in Asda and £3.50 in Sainsbury’s.
Buying the items in the set separately – a bodyspray (150ml) and bodywash (250ml) – will only cost £3 at Asda and £3.50 at Sainsbury's.
Another Lynx gift set, The Golden Year Collection, costs £8 in Wilko.
How to find the cheapest deals
- Find the cheapest online prices: Google Shopping is a good tool for finding the cheapest price – it searches a wide range of retailers of various sizes
- Abandon online shopping baskets: Don't go straight to check-out after putting the items in your basket – it may tease retailers into giving you discount codes
- Ask a site to negotiate a fee for you: If you're struggling to find a deal, Flubit is a free site that aims to negotiate discounts for you
- Sign up to retailers' newsletters for big discounts: It sometimes means a percentage discount code, or a straight discount off your first shop
- Check when stores discount groceries: Check with your local store when they discount food items that are about to expire – this is the perfect time to nab bargains
But the same three items – a bodyspray (150ml), bodywash (250ml) and anti-perspirant (150ml) – will cost £5 if you buy them individually at the same store.
A Dove Men Plus Care Trio Three Piece Gift set costs £9 at Asda but buying the three items individually at the same store only costs £3.80 – a saving of £5.20.
A Wilko spokesman said: "We review pricing on a regular basis and to remain competitive we recently reduced the price of a significant number of popular branded products.
"On this occasion, the gift set price did not change to reflect the changes to the individual products and we’re going to put this right as quickly as possible."
A Sainsbury's spokesman said: "The Lynx body spray is currently on promotion. Our Christmas giftsets offer great value."
The Sun has asked Boots and Asda for comment.
