One of the many reasons we still rate The Walking Dead nine seasons in? There’s not just one token ‘strong female character’, but a whole world populated with complex, fierce women.
And with season nine streaming weekly on NOW TV, we’ve been reminded that ‘badass’ comes in lots of forms. Be they heroines or villains – or somewhere in the murky moral grey area in between – these five TWD women stand out as fully-realised, fully kickass characters. Screenwriters of the world, take note.
Michonne
Michonne (Danai Gurira) caused a collective ‘thunk’ of jaws on the ground when she arrived on the show wielding a katana and leading two walkers on chains to disguise her scent among other walkers (smart and badass). Evolving from a distrustful loner to a key player, her whip-smart intellect and powers of reason are as important as her (amazing) fighting skills. We can’t wait to see her in action in season nine.
Badass rating: 5/5
Jadis/Anne
One of the most enigmatic characters on the show, Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) is the calm and cunning leader of the Scavengers who set up base in a scrapyard (all the better for making DIY weapons to fight the walkers with). In her pre-apocalypse life she was an artist called Anne – now she’s a cold-hearted strategist. At the start of season nine, she seems to be playing ball with the other survivors, but her loyalties are never clear-cut…
Badass rating: 3/5
Rosita
She can hot-wire cars, defuse an IED, and tie knots better than Ray Mears; Rosita (Christian Serratos) has got some serious survivalist skills. Pretty handy in a post-apocalyptic world. She’s stubborn and hot-headed to the point of recklessness, but also loyal and courageous – if you hurt someone she cares about, she’ll come for you.
Badass rating: 4/5
Deanna
Not all badasses fight – someone has to actually rebuild civilisation. That’s the case with Deanna (Tovah Feldshuh), a former Congresswoman and the formidable leader of the Alexandria Safe Zone. She’ll do anything to see her vision for Alexandria realised – even if it means sacrificing herself.
Badass rating: 3/5
Sasha
Aside from being skilled with a sniper rifle, sharpshooter Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) has to cope emotionally after losing someone close to her, and conquer the trauma it leaves her with (a battle that’s as tough as any violent showdown with the walkers). Ultimately, she refuses to be a victim, despite the horror surrounding her. And for that, she earns a place on our badass list.
Badass rating: 4/5
