‘I thought my body was broken’: Bride, 31, shares her heartbreaking experience of dealing with a miscarriage just days before she got married

  • Ashlee Charlton, 31, from Melbourne, miscarried just before her wedding
  • She spoke to FEMAIL about processing a tragic moment while celebrating
  • Ashlee explained: ‘I thought my body was broken’ when she found out
  • However, she said having her wedding at that time helped her to get through it

In films and novels, a wedding is often portrayed as the happiest day of a couple’s life together.

But for one heartbroken bride, her wedding day also fell as she was coming to terms with one of the hardest experiences she’s ever faced.

Ashlee Charlton, who is originally from Melbourne but who lives in London, suffered a miscarriage mere hours before she flew from the UK back to Australia to get married – meaning she and her partner celebrated a festive day while they were personally dealing with tragedy.

‘I thought my body was broken,’ the 31-year-old recalled to FEMAIL.

Ashlee (pictured with her page boys) said it was a difficult time to celebrate what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life when she was also very emotional

The day before they were due to fly out to Melbourne for the wedding, Ashlee (pictured with Liam) noticed she was spotting and so she made an appointment with her midwife

For Ashlee and Liam, wanting a baby was always on the cards, but the couple were not sure it would be possible when Ashlee caught a parasite when they were travelling in the Amazon and a first pregnancy didn’t work out.

‘We hadn’t talked properly about starting a family yet, but I did feel that falling pregnant might not be on the cards for us,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

‘So needless to say when we found out I was pregnant, we were shocked.’

As soon as Ashlee was pregnant, she confessed their wedding plans went out of the window.

The couple – who live in London – were due to fly home to Australia in order to enjoy their nuptials with close friends and family.

‘The day before we were due to fly out, though, I started spotting,’ Ashlee said.

‘I went to my midwife appointment on the morning of our flight, and she told me to go straight to the emergency room.’

Confused and only nine weeks into her pregnancy, Ashlee was soon told that she didn’t ‘have a healthy nine-week baby growing inside me’ (pictured on her wedding day)

The couple were safe to fly to Australia, but Ashlee (pictured at her wedding) was emotional while on the plane as she grappled with celebrating her wedding, but also processing her grief

Confused and only nine weeks into her pregnancy, Ashlee was soon told that she didn’t ‘have a healthy nine-week baby growing inside me’.

‘At the time, they didn’t know whether it was a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, but they advised that I couldn’t fly,’ she said.

‘However, my nurse rushed my bloods and confirmed it was a miscarriage rather than an ectopic pregnancy, so the danger of something haemhorrhaging mid-flight wasn’t a concern.’

‘Before the plane took off I began to bawl,’ Ashlee said. ‘Those really deep cries where you just can’t catch your breath’ (pictured: the wedding venue)

However, reflecting, the couple (pictured) are happy that they got to see friends and family and celebrate their wedding while they were having a tough time

The couple knew they needed to continue with their plans to fly home and so they hurriedly packed their bags to head back to Australia for the wedding:

‘Before the plane took off I began to bawl,’ Ashlee said. ‘Those really deep cries where you just can’t catch your breath.

‘The only thing that was more painful than my heartache was the cramps – the intense sharp pains your body goes through for up to two weeks after a miscarriage. And they didn’t let up.’

‘Seeing so many loved ones reminded me of how lucky we are,’ Ashlee (pictured) said. ‘To be surrounded by such incredible people who are positive and loving’

The 31-year-old (pictured) added: ‘There were moments of guilt about feeling happy, but overall having the wedding so soon afterwards was a godsend’

When they landed in Melbourne, the couple knew they had to put on a brave face, even though it was hard.

‘The rational side of you knows that miscarriage is a possibility and it can happen for all kinds of reasons, but that doesn’t stop the negative thoughts,’ Ashlee said.

‘I thought my body was broken, that I wasn’t good enough to be pregnant. I was angry at the wedding because I thought of the stress of organising it, and how it was possibly what led to the miscarriage.’

But she also said that being surrounded by her family and friends was key:

‘Seeing so many loved ones reminded me of how lucky we are,’ she said. ‘To be surrounded by such incredible people who are positive and loving.

‘There were moments of guilt about feeling happy, but overall having the wedding so soon afterwards was a godsend.’
