Jamie Carragher says Raheem Sterling has proven his decision to leave Liverpool right.
The 23-year-old quit the Reds for Manchester City in 2015 for a blockbuster £45million.
Since playing at the Etihad, Sterling has won a Premier League title and a League Cup. Last season the forward recorded his best goalscoring return to date, finding the back of the net 23 times.
The England star has scored seven goals in 14 appearances this term and has just signed a bumper new deal at Manchester City.
Sterling’s contract has been extended until 2023 and he will pocket roughly £275,000-a-week.
Carragher who bemoaned Sterling’s exit at the time, says he cannot argue with his decision.
"No matter how it came about – or how unpalatable to Liverpool supporters to lose such an important player – there is no one who can look at how his career has progressed and say he made the wrong decision," Carragher penned in his column for The Telegraph.
"He left for footballing reasons given where Liverpool stood at the time and the direction City were heading.
"Raheem was guaranteed to compete for the Premier League and Champions League every season, and work under one of the best managers of all-time.
"Since Pep Guardiola arrived, Raheem’s game has gone up a level so he now ranks alongside Harry Kane as England’s best player."
Fans have responded to Carragher’s comments, with many agreeing with the former Liverpool centre-back.
One supporter tweeted: "Was devastated when he left Liverpool but can’t argue with anything in the article. Can see him scoring a couple of goals on Sunday and that will go some way to me forgiving him for leaving."
Another posted: "All due respect Jamie, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to say he was right to leave Liverpool. Three words, premier league titles."
