Carrie Underwood says she could barely sing after suffering a fall that resulted in a broken wrist and cuts on her face.
“I had stitches inside my mouth, outside my mouth,” Underwood, 35, told Vulture about how her injury affected her career. “It was physically impossible [to sing].”
After the incident happened in November 2017, she ultimately underwent surgery on her wrist and got some 40 stitches on her face.
Getting back into the studio to record her sixth album brought its own challenges and fears that her voice would be changed forever.
“Going into the studio for the first time, it was a mind game,” she believed. “‘Do I sound the same? Is my diction the same? Does my mouth move the same as it did before?’”
In all, Underwood said there were slight problems with pronunciation adding, “My m’s and b’s and p’s were kind of the issue.”
She is also aware that her voice won’t be the same forever. “Things change when you get older; your muscles change. I kind of expect I’m not always going to sound like I’m 22 coming off of ‘American Idol.’ Hopefully I get better.”
Underwood, who is expecting her second child with husband Mike Fisher, said she did not seek a vocal coach’s help after the mishap.
