Wayne Rooney trolls himself as he asks former Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand if he wants ‘picking up in the morning’ on his 40th birthday

The now DC United star, 33, famously tweeted the world asking Ferdinand if he wanted "picking up in the morning" way back in 2011.

Roo has never lived it down either, even seven years later – and used it as an opportunity for a laugh earlier today.

In 2011, during their time at United together, Rooney tweeted: "Hi rio do u want picking up in the morning pal".

Today, the MLS star kept up the long-running gag, tweeting a picture of the pair together, captioned: "Happy 40th Birthday @rioferdy5.

"Some great memories but not sure what I did to upset you here.

"Let me know if you want picking up in the morning pal".

Ferdinand took the time, even on his big day, to reply, saying: You must have forgotten to pick me up in the morning… @WayneRooney".

Meanwhile, Rooney – who almost single-handedly led his DC United side to the MLS play-offs – is preparing for a controversial return to the England squad.

Much has been said of the Three Lions leading-scorer's inclusion, but Gareth Southgate is set to have the final say on how much he plays against the USA.
