Pictures have emerged showing a soccer star in bed with the wife of a businessman accused of killing him when he caught them together.
Sao Paulo star Daniel Correa Freitas was found dead in a bush on Oct. 27 in the city of Sao Jose dos Pinhais in Brazil’s southern state of Parana with his throat slit and his genitals cut off.
Businessman Edson Brittes Junior, 38, was arrested three days later and confessed to killing the 24-year-old soccer star in a “moment of madness” after he said he caught Freitas trying to rape his wife, Cristiana.
Freitas, who was on loan to Sao Bento, was invited to Edson’s daughter’s 18th birthday party, which began in a nightclub and continued the following morning at the family’s home.
On Tuesday, pictures of the soccer star grinning while he lay in bed with Cristiana — fast asleep in the same dress she wore to the party — emerged in Brazil as she and her daughter, Allana, were held for questioning by police.
The photos were recovered from WhatsApp messages Freitas sent friends just before he was killed.
He bragged in one message showing him cozying up to Cristiana as she lay with her head on her pillow, saying: “I can sleep here. There are several women sleeping all over the house.”
An unnamed friend, in an ominous warning, responded: “Is he asleep? Nothing you can do then, they’re going to kick you out of the house.”
Another added: “They’re going to make mincemeat of you, that guy is going to come and beat you up.”
Police say they believe Freitas was beaten to death in Edson’s home before his body was taken away in the trunk of a car and dumped in the bush.
His genitals were dismembered after his death.
Officers have said they are not sure whether the soccer star had sex with Cristiana. Edson’s police confession came after he told a TV program that he had dragged Freitas off his wife and beaten him. Stating he had smashed his bedroom door down after finding it locked and hearing his wife’s screams from inside, he said: “That’s when I dragged him off my wife, threw him to the floor and stopped that monster raping my wife.
“I hit him a lot, a lot and took him out of the house. I don’t know if he was awake or unconscious or if he had just closed his eyes,” Edson said. “I wasn’t thinking of anything. I had a knife in the car, a small knife, which was with the tools in the trunk. I did not know I was going to do that, I was desperate, beside myself with rage. I looked in the trunk and saw what was there.”
Police arrested Cristiana and Allana after concluding they had tried to persuade witnesses to cover up the murder. Three other suspects thought to have participated in the beating are still being hunted by detectives.
Freitas’ club, which plays in the Brazilian equivalent of the English Premier League, tweeted after his body was found: “The Sao Paulo football club deeply regrets the death of midfielder Daniel Correa Freitas.”
A tweet from his old side Botafogo said: “Botafogo regrets the demise of former player Daniel Correa Freitas and expresses solidarity with friends and family.”
