Rangana Herath made Joe Root his 100th Test victim in Galle as England slipped to 113-5 at lunch on day one of the first Test.

Sri Lanka spinner Herath, playing his 93rd and final Test, became the third bowler to take 100 scalps at a single Test venue after Muttiah Muralitharan (Galle, Kandy, Colombo) and James Anderson (Lord’s) when he bowled Root for 35 on Tuesday morning, taking his overall tally to 431.
Root and Keaton Jennings (46) had put on 62 for England’s second wicket after seamer Suranga Lakmal had debutant Rory Burns (9) caught behind and bowled Moeen Ali (0) for a golden duck in the third over following Root’s decision to bat first.
England slipped from 72-2 to 103-5 one Root was removed, with Dilruwan Perera bowling Jennings and Stokes, leaving Jos Buttler (10no) and the tourists’ second debutant, Ben Foakes (5no) to steer them to lunch.
England had earlier made the decision to omit Stuart Broad from their side, with Anderson, Sam Curran and Stokes forming the seam attack and Moeen, Adil Rashid and Jack Leach offering spin.
