Paul Merson admits sensational Arsenal have forced him to eat his words after legend's Liverpool thrashing prediction

The former Gunners star held his hands up and said he was delighted to see Unai Emery's team take the game to Liverpool.

Merson tweeted: "Fair play to @Arsenal, I got that wrong yesterday and I’m sooo glad they made me eat my words.

"Clear they are improving every week #holdmyhandsup I never want Arsenal to do badly!

"I just give my honest opinion about everyone at the time I’m asked."

Alexandre Lacazette equalised with a fine finish late on at the Emirates to earn his side a draw after James Milner had given the visitors the lead.

But it could have been even better for Arsenal who went close through Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who threatened to end their former Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp's unbeaten league record this season.

For Arsenal, it was a 14th game without defeat since the nightmare start to the season against Manchester City and Chelsea.

But Merson, who spent 12 years at Highbury between 1985 and 1997, was expecting an onslaught from the visiting Reds.

In his weekly predictions for Sky Sports, he said: "Arsenal's big worry is when they play Liverpool – I dread to think what that score will be.

"I can't see anything but a Liverpool win. I think this is the day Arsenal show some big cracks.

"I just think the defence is terrible, all over the place, and no different to what it was before.

"We saw Leicester rip Arsenal to shreds for 30 minutes. Leicester's front three aren't even in the same class as Liverpool's. I just cannot see how Arsenal will live with them.

"People will say: 'Oh Arsenal will score goals…' but Liverpool's defence has been superb.

"I watched Arsenal win 11 games on the trot, and they could have easily lost four of them, let alone drawn them."
