Teaching your children that honesty is the best policy is an important lesson, but it’s difficult to instil.
Kids can be prone to telling fibs, and normally the best thing to do is to get them to ‘fess up – even though there might be consequences.
A mum had no idea what to do after her six-year-old daughter lied to her PE teacher and said it was her birthday.
She said the two of them were coming back in the car from after school club when her little girl told her what she had done – but the lie was bigger than the mum initially thought.
Writing on Reddit’s parenting thread, she explained: "She told the teacher it was her birthday so she got to choose who was ‘it’ since this is a special birthday privilege.
"At first I stumbled over my words because this is an elaborate con she just confessed to."
The mum said she explained to her daughter that lying is wrong and that she will have to write her gym teacher a letter explaining what she did and say sorry – until they got home and the mum realised how big the web of lies was.
"I open her backpack.
"There’s a crown for a birthday girl who turned 7 today.
"So I call her over and ask what this crown is for. ‘It’s my crown.’ She said. I asked her who gave it to her. ‘My teacher’ I was confused.
"Gym teachers never gave out birthday crowns when I was in school. So I asked if her regular teacher gave her the crown. ‘Yes’ she says."
Her daughter’s deception went deeper than the mum realised.
"Time stood still. My brain couldn’t handle this confession. My 6 year old girl played the long con on everyone at school today into thinking it was her birthday. They even sang to her."
The mum said got her to explain and write apology notes to the school but she was not sure how to deal with her daughter’s behaviour in the long-run.
Some Reddit users thought the girl’s behaviour was "worrying" and other parents thought she just wanted to "feel special" at the new school and offered advice.
One wrote: "She sounds pretty clever.. why didn’t the adult know better? If anything I would talk to her like you did, and then laugh about it out of her presence. She sounds like a spirited child!"
