New deal for Simpson as Giants re-sign five

Greater Western Sydney have re-signed five players to new deals for next season while delisting foundation player Tim Mohr and the untried Lachie Tiziani.

Dawson Simpson and Lachie Keeffe have both agreed to one-year contracts as well as rookie-listed Dylan Buckley, Jack Buckley and Jake Stein.

Mohr was a pre-selection for the Giants ahead of their inaugural 2012 season and played 35 games in his first two years. But calf, knee, foot and hamstring injuries played a big role in restricting him to just 13 matches in the last five years.

Simpson’s career will now enter a 12th season and despite only having 39 career games to his credit, the huge ruckman looms as a key piece of the Giants’ side with Rory Lobb now at Fremantle, although the Giants are believed to be considering bringing Shane Mumford out of retirement to help Simpson.

After four years in the wilderness, including a two-year drug ban, Keeffe made a solid return to senior footy this season playing eight games including the Giants’ losing semi-final against his old side Collingwood.

Dylan Buckley played two games for GWS this year after last year being delisted by Carlton where he played 39 games while Jake Buckley and Stein are yet to debut. Stein is a category B rookie having previously been a decathlete.

“We thank Lachie and Tim for their contribution to the Giants during their time with us,” list manager Jason McCartney said.

“Tim has been with us from the start and was an important player during our early years as he notched up 48 AFL games, which is no small feat.

“Lachie’s a great young academy kid who showed some positive progression earlier in the year before unfortunately suffering an ACL injury.

“We wish them both well in their future endeavours.”

Mohr and Tiziani join the retired Ryan Griffen and traded quartet Lobb, Dylan Shiel (Essendon), Tom Scully (Hawthorn) and Will Setterfield (Carlton) as departures from the club this post-season.

As it stands, the Giants head to next month’s draft with four picks in the top 25 (nine, 11, 19 and 25).
