Mauricio Pochettino’s damning assessment of Spurs’ Champions League chances

Mauricio Pochettino admitted that Tottenham are not good enough to qualify for the Champions League knockout stage.

Spurs threw away a 2-1 lead to draw with PSV in Eindhoven on Wednesday night as Hugo Lloris was sent off for the visitors.

And with his side trailing Inter Milan and Barcelona by five points with three games to play, Pochettino was honest about their chances of qualfying.

"It wasn’t enough today," he said. "If you don’t win this type of game it’s so difficult to deserve to qualify in the Champions League.

"We dominated the game but need to be so aggressive and score more goals. It’s not so difficult to judge or analyse the game. That is the reality on the pitch. It’s so easy to look for someone to blame like the referee or Hugo."

Pochettino also revealed he did not feel Lloris should have been sent off after the Frenchman saw red for a foul on Hirving Lozano.

"In my opinion it wasn’t a red card, but I don’t blame the referee," he said.

"He (Hugo) doesn’t need to apologise. Football is about making mistakes. It was an action in football that happens often and of course sometimes that happens."

Pochettino’s men had looked on the way to securing the victory they needed to keep alive their hopes in Group B – thanks to goals from Lucas Moura and Harry Kane.

But three minutes from time Luuk De Jong stabbed in an equaliser for PSV to produce a result that more than likely will do neither of these sides any good.
