Flaunt your wealth challenge hits China with elite posting ridiculous pictures falling out of cars surrounded by luxury goods

The trend started in Russia, but has quickly sent keen Weibo and Instagram users head over heels to show off their goods.

On Weibo, China's equivalent to Facebook, over one million users have taken part in the latest craze called xuanfu tiaozhan, or "flaunt your wealth".

The trend has since spread to Instagram with over 50,000 posting photos alongside a hashtag with the trend name for the challenge.

The trend started in Russia and was called the falling stars challenge and involved posters posing face down in photos, usually appearing to have tumbled from a luxury vehicle.

The image also usually features expensive possessions splayed around them, including designer goods, make up, or expensive equipment.

But despite the focus on wealthy millennials showing off lavish items, the trend has since moved into ordinary everyday posts of workers, students, gymgoers, dancers, office workers and even children pictured with their toys.

However, the trend has not ended well for everyone as one woman was pictured in Taizhou, Zhejiang province appearing to fall from a car near to a pedestrian crossing with make up, high heels and a designer handbag scatted around her.

According to local media, she was reportedly later found by police and fined.

The craze has gained such popularity in China that state-run newspaper People's Daily deflected from the wealthy posts by sharing photos of 'falling' people from "all walks of life", including emergency services and public workers.

In a post, the paper said: "The younger generation dares to express themselves, they are dazzled by love of their work.

"They are "rich" because of their dedication… It is the greatest asset of society."
