When you check in to a hotel, there are a few basics you expect from a comfortable bed to a decent breakfast.
But there are some hotels where guests have found unexpected extras of a supernatural nature, from ghost sightings to creepy paranormal activity.
Now, Hotels.com has revealed some of the world’s spookiest hotels where, alongside the usual amenities, you could find ghoulish appearances, creepy goings-on and supernatural presences.
We take a look at some of the world’s best haunted hotels that need to be on any ghost-hunter’s list… if you think you’re brave enough to last the night…
1. The Stanley Hotel, USA
Stephen King found himself stranded at The Stanley Hotel due to snowfall, and its spooky atmosphere inspired him to write his iconic novel The Shining. Guests have reported everything from the sounds of giggling children on the fourth floor, to an ominous piano being heard in the dead of the night.

2. Ettington Park Hotel, UK
Often hailed as one of Britain’s most haunted hotels, this mansion in Stratford-upon-Avon featured in 1963 film The Haunting.
However, it’s not just in the films that ghostly apparitions feature. In fact both guests and staff have reported sightings of a man and his dog in the library, an elderly Victorian lady wandering around the conservatory, and a servant girl Mary, who is said to have died after a fall, on the main staircase.

3. The Emily Morgan, USA
While nowadays the Emily Morgan is a luxury hotel, the building originally served as a hospital, complete with its own morgue and psychiatric ward. Guests and staff claim to have heard unexplained noises, seen spooky apparitions – and some have even felt the touch of a cold hand…

4. Waitomo Caves Hotel, New Zealand
One of New Zealand’s most notoriously haunted spots, this hotel has had its fair share of ghost sightings from a Maori princess to a Victorian-clothed woman wandering the hallways.
Then there are the rooms themselves, some of which are inhabited by their own spirits – in fact, some of the staff tend to avoid these because of the supernatural presence that can be felt there.
The hotel is right by Maori sacred caves, some of which are said to have been used as burial sites.

5. Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Canada
The Fairmont has quite the reputation for being the home of restless spirits – in fact, guests have reportedly been pushed by the ghouls, or been startled by paranormal activity throughout the night.
Then there are the reported sightings – the most notorious being the bride who is said to have died on the hotel’s marble staircase and continues to reside there, to bell boy Sam whose soul is said never to have left, and in fact he can sometimes be quite the helpful spirit.

Two ghosts are said to haunt the castle grounds; Emperor Nero, who is searching for a peaceful place to rest, and an alchemist said to have died in the Hotel’s central tower after being struck by lightning.

7. Dalhousie Castle Hotel & Spa, Scotland
The first thing you need to know about this hotel? It has its very own dungeon. The second thing you need to know? It has a resident ghost on its stairs and in the main corridor – and some guests have reported experiencing sudden chills in the eerier rooms.
