Derrick Lewis had the biggest win of his career when he knocked out Alexander Volkov at UFC 229 earlier this month.
And it’s proving to the biggest win for his bank account, too.
Lewis was asked a press conference Thursday for UFC 230 just how much that punch has earned him, “The Black Beast” said, according to MMAFighting:
“It’s probably a million,” Lewis said. “Probably about a million.”
Lewis’ stock has never been higher and he cashed in on that by landing a fight against heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier in what will be the main event at UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden.
According to MMAFighting, he’ll be making some serious bank for the fight that got announced just three weeks before the event:
Most importantly, Lewis said the results of UFC 229 have paid dividends in his paycheck. He said he stands to make more at UFC 230 than his three other fights this year combined. Lewis made $260,000 at UFC 226, $320,000 (plus a performance of the night bonus) at UFC 229 and presumably in the $300,000 range at UFC Austin (a performance of night bonus included), though Texas does not release guaranteed purse information.
Lewis has long been a fan of the hardcore UFC fans for his sense of humor that he shows off in interviews and on social media. But then his post-fight “My balls were hot” interview with Joe Rogan after his fight at UFC 229 went viral and has made him a breakout star with casual fight fans.
And now that’s helping him make some serious money. Which is great for one of the funniest guys in the fight game.
