Man’s arm is ‘severed’ after lift he’s working on started moving

An engineer dragged himself to safety after losing an arm when a lift he was working on suddenly started moving, it has been claimed.

The contractor, who has not been named, was working on a lift inside a Job Centre in Bristol city centre when the horrific accident occurred.

A source told The Mirror: “He was repairing one of their six lifts, and the lift started working while he was in the shaft.

“Somehow he managed to get out of it and then had to walk down several flights of stairs, got to reception and they called for help.”

The contractor was taken to hospital where he is believed to be recovering from his terrible injury in intensive care at Bristol’s Southmead Hospital.

South Western Ambulance Service confirmed he is being treated for a ‘serious arm injury’.

A rapid response vehicle and air ambulance were dispatched to the emergency. An ambulance spokesperson said: “We were called at just before 8.55am to attend an incident on Temple Street, Bristol.

“A male patient was transported by road ambulance to Southmead Hospital with a serious arm injury.”

The job centre building is managed Bristol City Council who have launched an internal investigation following the incident.

A Bristol City Council spokesman said: “We can confirm a contractor working at our 100 Temple Street site was injured this morning while carrying out maintenance to the building’s lifts.

“The man suffered severe injuries and was taken to Southmead Hospital.

“An internal investigation is underway and the Health and Safety Executive has been notified.

“The Citizen Service Point at 100 Temple St was temporarily closed in the aftermath of the incident but has now reopened. No further comment can be made at this time.”
