Supergirl is coming back down to Earth for her fourth season, taking cues from the political world rather than extraterrestrial ones.
Season 3 shot fans into outer space to watch Kara tangle with ancient prophecies and face down Reign, one of the five Worldkillers from the DC comics.
The next installment will tone down the fantasy levels a notch, as viewers watch Kara return to her ‘normal’ life in National City as a reporter, low-key saving the town every once in a while. And the choice for her next foe also seems to be inspired by some real life headlines.
Executive producer Robert Rovner told The Hollywood Reporter that Supergirl will be taking on Agent Liberty, “a character that is preying on people’s fears about aliens from outer space as they’ve disenfranchised people that he’s familiar with.”
Rovner went on to reveal more about the new baddie played by Smallville‘s Sam Witwer, saying “he’s a very persuasive orator and a very charismatic figure who breeds this discontent first in National City and then the nation against aliens.”
If you’re thinking this sounds like something you might have heard before, there’s a reason.
The show deliberately picked on today’s political climate by giving Supergirl an adversary battling on the grounds of beliefs, suggesting it is not an unusual choice for the DC universe.
“Superman and Supergirl always were able to speak out for issues and for social justice. In a world where a lot of us are divided it’s great to explore how a character like Supergirl can try and unite a divided people,” said Rovner.
“It’s something that she will struggle with all season. It’s something that a lot of us are dealing with and I think she can hopefully inspire all of us to figure out a way to bridge the divide.”
The story also draws on arcs from the comics, namely Red Son (‘Red Daughter’, in this case).
Superman‘s Red Son told the alternative tale of what Clark Kent would have landed in Russia and not the U.S. The upcoming Supergirl interpretation will see Kara tackling someone who has been raised with different values and believes in them as much as Kara believes in hers.
The producer hinted that this could be one of Supergirl’s biggest challenges so far, as Agent Liberty is playing very different type of game, and one that targets her own kind.
“It’s very frightening because he’s a very forceful figure unlike a lot of the villains that Supergirl has faced in the past who she could punch and battle physically; she’s dealing with what he’s creating on a much more hearts and minds level. How does she combat this villain when it’s not like the key to it is punching her way out of it?,” Rovner continued.
The National City gang shows no signs of stopping its nods to planet Earth either and aims to create change, Rovner added “we want to continue to tell stories that reflect the world we’re living in and have Supergirl be a beacon of hope of strength and help guide us any way she can so she can inspire the best in people.”
Pay attention, folks, Supergirl wants you to sit up and listen.
