At least 55 killed including seven kids as 'overloaded and speeding' bus veers off the road in Kenya

The bus was 'overloaded and speeding', according to one of the survivors.

Kenyan cops said the driver lost control of the vehicle as it plunged down a slope at a notorious accident black spot. The roof was ripped off.

The bus had been travelling from the capital, Nairobi, to the western town of Kakamega on Wednesday when the accident occurred around 4 a.m., Rift Valley regional police boss Francis Munyambu said.

A male survivor claimed the bus was carrying at least 70 passengers, and that some of them were standing.

He said the driver was not complying with traffic rules but that he chose to keep quiet because the bus crew would have beaten him up.

He described the crew as "very arrogant".

The bus did not have a license to travel at night, according to the government agency in charge of road safety.

"I felt the bus swerve from one side to the other and then I found myself in the middle of nowhere," passenger Joseph Obonyo said.

"There was a body near me and people were being thrown out of the bus, flying out of it like aeroplanes, and where we were thrown that was it… I am only able to say that God saved me and I am truly thankful."

According to government statistics, around 3,000 Kenyans die every year in road accidents.

In the 2015 Global Status Report on Road Safety, the World Health Organization said Kenyan roads are among the most dangerous in the world, claiming around 29.1 lives per 100,000 people.
