The Circle finished its very first run last night (October 8) with the live final, hosted by presenters Maya Jama and Alice Levine, airing on Channel 4.
After three weeks of little white lies (Freddie, we’re looking at you), pretty big ones (Kate/Alex, this one’s for you) and a lot of TV muting (you again, Freds), viewers tuned in to see the announcement of the winner.
We also saw each of the final four contestants come face-to-face for the very first time. This, of course, meant that resident catfish Kate/Alex came clean to close friend Dan about his true identity – and it’s fair to say that it made for pretty uncomfortable viewing.
Initially, Dan was not a happy bunny. But as the live show went on, he seemed to come to terms with who Kate/Alex is – making sure to congratulate him on his big £75k win.
We caught up with Alex following the finale episode, and he revealed just what happened between himself and Dan after the cameras stopped rolling.
“Afterwards, last night, once it all settled down, friends and family got injected into the situation… it just all got a bit diluted,” Alex told Digital Spy.
He also revealed that the pair “left on good terms” but that he would still be keen to “go for a beer” with Dan to “have a proper chat” about everything.
But when talking about the awkwardness of their initial meeting, which followed three weeks of chatting behind screens in The Circle, Alex admitted that he felt he had to take Dan’s upset “on the chin”, despite not liking confrontation.
“It was a little bit heartbreaking, if I’m honest… To see him [Dan] react like that,” Alex added.
“That’s what was one of the hardest points about the meet… I’ve walked this really fine moral line [throughout the show]. I haven’t made him look silly, from my end. I’ve really tried not to.
“He can’t see that, because he’s got as much knowledge as me [having not seen the show],” he said.
“I genuinely feel that he’s one of the reasons I’m in the position I’m in,” Alex continued about Dan. “That makes me feel a bit guilty… but I feel I had a genuine friendship there.
“Unfortunately that’s the nature of playing a fake person, it’s so toxic, you get attached to this person and they’re attached to an image and a persona… I think that’s why me and Dan got on so well, because I felt I could be a bit of me from the beginning. And it lasted throughout.”
Let’s hope they end up being good friends now they’re outside The Circle.
