Why Strictly Come Dancing's Charles Venn has had a "tough" time training for this week's performance

Casualty star Charles Venn has already impressed the Strictly Come Dancing judges with his Cha Cha Cha and Quickstep.

But on this weekend’s show, he’s facing a tougher challenge as he tackles the American Smooth with professional partner Karen Clifton.

For Charles, the routine is proving tricky because the slower style of the dance goes against his “natural rhythm and style”.

“It’s been a tough week. Ballroom is not really my forte. I am doing a dance that goes against my natural rhythm and style,” he told Digital Spy.

“I am usually on the beat when I hear something, but this American Smooth Foxtrot is slower and it’s almost like a wavy line. It’s very different to the Quickstep which had those moments like hops and bounces. This dance is smooth – exactly what it says on the tin.”

However, Charles is ready for the challenge and to expand his dancing repertoire.

“The great thing about it though is that it allows me to perform a different side to myself as a wannabe dancer – that’s what I am. I am a wannabe, I am not there at all yet. I’m still a novice,” he said.

“These are all styles that the professional dancers have taken years to master.”

For Movie Week, Charles and Karen will perform the American Smooth to ‘Up Where We Belong’ from An Officer and a Gentleman.

Since he’s started training on the show, Charles has escaped injury, but that doesn’t mean he’s not sore all the time.

“I’ve got a very sore shoulder, an aching achilles and my knee feels like it’s sleeping every so often – I have to keep waking it up. It’s all these types of things; you just ache all over,” he said.

“I said this to Karen and she said, ‘Welcome to the dance world!’ You experience these things on a daily basis and just get used to it. “

Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC One on Saturday (September 6) at 6.30pm, with the results show following on Sunday (September 7) at the later time of 7.45pm.
