Jaws star Richard Dreyfuss wants an updated version with a CGI shark

Steven Spielberg’s iconic shark movie Jaws should be re-released, according to actor Richard Dreyfuss – and it could actually be improved.

However, he’s wasn’t talking about the blockbuster’s narrative – rather the huge mechanical fish that admittedly looks a bit dated in the current movie climate.

It was released 43 years ago, let’s not forget…

Speaking to Deadline at this year’s Catalina Film Festival, Dreyfuss suggested that a CGI animal replacement would help the movie connect with the young audience of today.

“I think they should do it – it would be huge and it would open up the film to younger people. Is that blasphemy? No, no, I don’t think so. The technology now could make the shark look as good as the rest of the movie.

“They should put the money in to CGI that beast and make it come alive.”

We’re not so sure though; updating Spielberg’s wondrous killing-machine with modern technology could actually achieve the opposite effect, taking it into the territory of looking too advanced for the film’s footage quality.

Dreyfuss – who played Matt Hooper in the movie and then re-teamed with Spielberg on Close Encounters of the Third Kind – described the director’s achievements as “amazing” with the challenges he faced during production.

The Ready Player One filmmaker had only made one feature film before his 1975 masterpiece, so the technical glitches which almost tripled the shoot’s duration could have completely sunk his career.

We’re rather fortunate it didn’t.
