The Conjuring's James Wan won't direct the third movie

Horror hit The Conjuring is returning for a third movie, but it turns out that director James Wan will not be helming the film this time around.

Michael Chaves – who directed the upcoming horror The Curse of La Llorona – will replace Wan on The Conjuring 3, the next instalment of the adventures of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, reports Deadline.

This will make the film the first movie in the main series not to be directed by Wan. He will instead serve as producer on The Conjuring 3, just as he did on The Curse of La Llorona.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are assumed to be returning as their fictionalised versions of the real-life Warren couple in another movie based on one of their cases. In this case, it’s rumoured to be their investigation of the Southend Werewolf (no joke!).

The Curse of La Llorona will be Chaves’ directorial feature debut, although his short The Maiden was named Best Super Short Film at the Shriekfest 2016.

The Conjuring series has spawned three spin-offs as well as the sequels, most recently the disappointing but successful prequel The Nun, directed by Corin Hardy. A third Annabelle movie is also in the works.

Wan most recently directed Warner Bros’ next DC movie, Aquaman, which will be released in December.

The Conjuring 3 is expected to arrive in 2020, although that is unconfirmed.
