Wonder if SNL creator Lorne Michaels is still grateful that Kanye West “stepped up” to replace Ariana Grande? In the 27th season premiere of Saturday Night Live last night, Kanye replaced Ariana, who earlier this month asked to cancel her commitment to be on the show due to “emotional reasons.”
In Ariana’s place, SNL got a bizarre performance from Ye that some believe belongs with the all-time epic fails in the show’s history, up there with Ashlee Simpson’s failed lip sync and Lana Del Rey’s stiff, autotuned appearance years later. With his entourage of wife Kim Kardashian West, daughter North West, Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick in attendance, Kanye performed his current single “I Love It” while dressed as a giant bottle of Perrier sparkling water.
At the same time, his collaborator on the song, Lil Pump, hopped around the stage in a giant Fiji water costume, while Adele Givens provided some voiceovers looking down upon both Kanye and Lil Pump, as her image was projected on a massive screen behind them. And of course both Kanye and Lil Pump dropped plenty of profanities during the live feed …
But what probably has even more people at the show shaking their heads was an unconventional third performance that Kanye slid into the show’s final close. In it, Kanye turned a rambling speech in front of the entire SNL cast about non-conformity into a political statement in favor of Donald Trump, putting on a red “Make America Great Again” hat in the middle of the speech. Ultimately, the show cut off the air before Kanye could finish, but we have an unedited version below.
