Spice epidemic causes half all inmates in single prison to fail drug test

Half of all lags failed drugs tests at a jail plagued by Spice.

In total 541 were found unconscious in just one year at the 830-capacity HMP Wealstun, a report claims — over 10 a week on average.

Many were in the zombie-like trances associated with the psychoactive substance, often smuggled in drug-soaked letters.

In February there was a spike in “code blue” alerts, meaning a prisoner has been found unconscious in their cell.

There were 161 in 28 days, nearly six a day, found the report by the Independent Monitoring Board.

It was believed to have come after a “significant batch” of Spice was smuggled into the category C jail in West Yorkshire.

Some 49% of lags there failed mandatory drug tests in June last year, the first month of the year covered by the report.

It hit 49% again last September before dropping to 12% by May.

The Prison Service said: “We’re spending £40million extra on measures including X-ray scanners, dogs, better perimeter searches and phone-blocking technology.”
