Hollyoaks newcomer Kelle Bryan opens up about suffering a stroke

Hollyoaks newcomer Kelle Bryan – who you may remember from ’90s girl group Eternal – has opened up about suffering a debilitating stroke two years ago.

Kelle, who’s set to shake things up in the village as Simone Loveday’s sister Martine, opened up about her health struggles to The Sun, also revealing she has the autoimmune disease Lupus.

“I had an infection and then a stroke and everything else all in the one year,” she explained. “With Lupus, the disease caused swelling on my brain. And because it was on my brain everything shut down, as it would with any kind of brain damage.

“I lost my speech, I couldn’t speak or walk. I lost it all. All the neurological things, so walking, talking, even things like reading and writing, I couldn’t write my own name, I couldn’t even text.”

Revealing her challenging extensive recovery, Kelle continued: “I had to relearn all of that again, and because it’s neurological my eyesight wasn’t very good so everything appeared blurred.

Kelle also reflected on her upcoming ‘Oaks gig, calling her role as air-hostess Martine “such a celebration”.

Speaking to Digital Spy about what fans can expect from the newest Loveday, Kelle promised near-constant “fireworks”: “She comes in with a bit of a bang.

“She doesn’t come in quietly at all and she drops a bit of a bombshell. After that, there are just fireworks all the time.

“I was reading one of my scripts the other day, and going ‘Oh my God’ and screaming at the top of my voice. If I am going like that and I am playing her, I can’t imagine what everyone else is going to be like.”

Hollyoaks airs on weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
