‘I wanted to do lots of different things, but now I’m doing Victoria, I find her quite addictive.’

She also elaborated on the fact that the series will see the queen age – much like Netflix’s The Crown, which has already recast the role of Elizabeth II and those around her with older actors.

Will Victoria be taking the same tact?

‘We’re deciding on a series-by-series basis,’ she told the publication. ‘In the next one, she’s starting to look a bit more matronly, she’s had six or seven children, so a bit wider, bit more of a bust, the make-up is more drawn.

The series is based on the novel by Helen FitzGerald.

The drama is said to fill the void left by the short-lived, but highly addictive, BBC series Bodyguard – which aired its season finale on Sunday night.

Ironically, that was fronted by actor Richard Madden – Coleman’s ex-boyfriend. She is now dating Victoria co-star Tom Hughes, who plays Prince Albert in the ITV show.

The Cry airs this weekend on BBC One; Victoria returns for its third season on ITV in 2019.
