The last two seasons of The Walking Dead weren’t the most popular, it’s safe to say. But with a new showrunner taking the reins in Angela Kang, it looks like things are looking up.
The first reviews for the ninth season are out, and the consensus (for the most part) appears to be that episode 1 ‘A New Beginning’ is actually rather good.
ComicBook.com also reviewed up to episode 3, and called the third episode “jaw-dropping”.
Below is a round-up of season 9 reviews:
Forbes
“I’ve watched the first episode of The Walking Dead’s ninth season and I can confidently say that it’s the best episode since season 6 and better than many in that season as well.
“For the first time in years, I’m actually looking forward to the next episode. I’m looking forward to The Walking Dead returning to what made it so entertaining to begin with.”
ScreenRant
“The Walking Dead season 9 premiere feels like the fresh start the series so desperately needs, trading grim wartime for a more peaceful period of growth and reflection. Then again, season 8 also had a strong opener that quickly led to episodes where the narrative stalled or became almost nonsensical, so one strong episode isn’t necessarily enough to right the course of a whole season. Still, for the first time in a long time, The Walking Dead may actually have something of a bright future ahead of it.”

“‘A New Beginning’ doesn’t abandon All Out War because it can’t, regardless of how poorly received that storyline may have been. It grows a new story out of the ashes and dares to make The Walking Dead frightening again while evolving it at the same time. It’s an ambitious undertaking for a show in its ninth season – especially one that’s about to lose its central character — but one Kang and the cast seem well-poised to make work.”
Den of Geek
“In general, the interesting moments are few and far between in the season nine premiere, which offered new showrunner Angela Kang, who’s written some of my favourite episodes of the series, a bit of a blank slate but ultimately feels like more of the same. My only hope is that ‘A New Beginning’ is not a sign of things to come.”

“This front half-season includes a jaw-dropping third episode that delivers some of the finest mystery and drama the show has ever seen in its eight-year run, making for a Walking Dead that will again make you count down to Sunday nights.
“In building the community bridge and forging the charter, Michonne says the survivors ‘need to build something that’s bigger than any one of us’. And while the loss of lead Andrew Lincoln and his Rick Grimes seems unfathomable, this new direction for the show can weather the loss — it’s only a shame Lincoln, who has long tethered the show as its beating heart, steps away just as the series gets a much-needed refresher and is the best it’s been since season five.”
The Walking Dead returns on October 7 on AMC in the US, and the following day (October 8) on FOX and NOW TV in the UK.
