Marvel’s The Defenders may return for future seasons, but the superhero line-up could look slightly different.
That’s because, in the words of Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb, “there are lots of Avengers, and through that, you should be able to ascertain that there may be lots of Defenders”.
Although Loeb has previously mentioned that The Defenders season two isn’t currently in the works, he’s now revealed to Entertainment Weekly that “it doesn’t mean that it’s off the table”.
“And it doesn’t mean that it even has to be with the original characters that were in the first Defenders.”
Loeb then elaborated on how a sophomore series of The Defenders doesn’t necessarily have to follow Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage’s narrative journey.
“No one at any time referred to them as ‘The Defenders’ — they didn’t wear a little ‘D’ on their belts, and they didn’t go to a building that had a big ‘Defenders’ [sign] in the air,” he said.
“They were four mismatched heroes who were joined by a lot of the other heroes that are in the stories that we do on Netflix, but that was that particular story.”
Digital Spy‘s review of the first season noted that the current heroes “need to lighten up”, so is it time that Marvel really did reshuffle the street-level pack?
All 8 episodes of The Defenders are available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
