Hotshot director Cary Fukunaga is nearly as famous as his stars. He’s best known for the Emmy-winning first season of “True Detective,” and he was just tapped to helm the next James Bond movie.
Most fans would expect Fukunaga’s taste in TV to be similarly stylish and cerebral — think “Twin Peaks” or “Westworld.”
Not so fast.
In an interview about his buzzy new Netflix show “Maniac,” Fukunaga offers a surprising revelation about his guilty binge-watching pleasure: an early-aughts teen soap.
“I went back to ‘The O.C.’ recently,” he tells The Post. “Am I going to regret saying that?”
Hey, it seems to be working for him. “Maniac,” out today, stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill as two lost souls participating in a mysterious pharmaceutical trial. The show is slick and surreal, hurtling its high-profile stars though an array of mind games.
In other words, it’s exactly what you’d expect from Fukunaga.
“The O.C.” certainly isn’t, but nobody ever called him predictable.
