Kesha pushes for equal rights for all on her new acoustic ballad “Here Comes the Change.” The song will appear in On the Basis of Sex, the upcoming film about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
There’s nothing subtle about this one: Kesha wonders, “Is it a crazy thought/ That if I had a child/ I hope they live to see the day/ When everyone’s equal?” Moments later, she offers reassurance — “I know it’s hard to be the right inside the wrong.” Backing vocalists borrow from gospel to add stirring power to the bridge. A harmonica riff points back to Sixties protest music.
In an essay penned for Refinery 29 that accompanied the release of “Here Comes the Change,” Kesha urged her listeners not to give into cynicism and bow out of politics. “If we don’t participate, if we don’t make our voices heard, things will only get worse,” she said. She teamed with the non-profit organization HeadCount to put together the song’s lyric video, which encourages viewers to register to vote.
On the Basis of Sex stars Felicity Jones as a young Ginsburg. With help from her husband, played by Armie Hammer, Jones brings a case before the U.S. Court of Appeals to battle centuries of gender discrimination.
Mimi Leder, who directed the film, helped pick Kesha to write “Here Comes the Change.” “I wanted her to write this song because her passionate voice and immense talent magnify the social justice imperatives Ruth Bader Ginsburg continues to fight for every day,” Leder said in a statement. “It was important to both of us that this song be not only an anthem to all that Ruth Bader Ginsburg achieved, but also a rallying cry for how much more change is yet to come.”
On the Basis of Sex is set to come out this Christmas.
