Emmerdale star Emma Atkins teases Charity and Vanessa's future as they finally declare their love

Emmerdale star Emma Atkins has promised a strong future for Charity Dingle and Vanessa Woodfield – at least for now – as they finally declare their love for each other.

Charity has an eventful few days in store next week as her drunken downward spiral continues and she tracks down her estranged father Obadiah – but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Romantic scenes airing on Thursday, September 27 show Charity and Vanessa finally saying “I love you” to each other for the first time – a moment that “Vanity” fans have been eagerly waiting for.

Asked whether Charity has found her true love, Emma replied: “Yes, no doubt about it. I think she’s looked everywhere else and she’s gone for the wrong type before this. Charity never actually went looking for love with Vanessa. In fact, she always warned Vanessa that it was just going to be a flash-in-the-pan thing.

“Charity always said that she wasn’t the type of person to say ‘I love you’, so it’s great and very interesting for the viewers to see that side where she does finally give into love and say it out loud.

“Charity is the first one to say it as well, which bowls Vanessa over. I think the audience will be in shock!”

On whether she wants Vanessa and Charity to stay together, Emma replied: “Yeah, for now. It’s nice in soaps to see functional relationships and not to put two people together and then break them up six weeks down the line. I think it’s interesting to see things unravel.

“Vanessa and Charity can still have their domestics and their clanging disagreements, but to see them stay together for the foreseeable future would only be right, just because it’s something that’s working for both of them and it’s showing different sides to their personalities.

“I think Vanessa has already shown that she’s more than capable of dealing with someone as dramatic and ridiculous as Charity. It’s like yin and yang, it just works.

“Who knows what will happen in the future? They might split up, Vanessa might cheat, Charity might cheat. There’s always something in soaps, so you’ve got to prepare for the fact that they can’t be happy forever. But it’d be nice to show them together for a while.

“It’s great that I’m part of a storyline with substance and not just putting on wigs and robbing cars. Although I do love that as well and I don’t want that mischief to end! If I can strike a balance between the two, then that’s really good.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
