Apple has launched a new feature in iOS 12 that lets you track your phone use.
Screen Time allows you to set limits as well as keep tabs on your social media use or game play time.
Reaction seems to be mostly surprise. People are alarmed at how long they’re spending on their phones and shocked at how often they pick it up to check what’s happened.
Some users are flat out refusing to install the new OS, seemingly unaware the feature is optional. While others have admitted it will give them pause for thought, but won’t change how they use their phones.
Meanwhile, some heavy social media users are quick to declare themselves "losers" after seeing how much they’re on social media.
And others seem surprised at how much time they’re spending on social media.
While some are just feeling…
One of the most interesting things about Screen Time is how it tracks both notifications and the amount of times you pick up your phone to check it. It’s illuminating for some.
Some people really like the feature though.
Other people have asked why it’s not possible to change how apps are categorised. One user suggested that they didn’t consider WhatsApp to be social media use, but messaging.
One Twitter user suggested that, perhaps, using your phone to track your phone use might not be in the best interests of companies that make phones.
And one user pointed out the hypocrisy of adults using Screen Time to curtail their children’s phone time. While themselves spending all day with their faces pressed up against an iPhone.
Some users seemed to be surprised about how much they used their phones.
So will Screen Time help people curb their personal use? Perhaps, but the tool seems to have genuine uses for parents looking to restrict their children’s use or tablets and phones.
