‘Game of Thrones’ Wins Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, Reclaiming Title from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

The biggest battle of the 2018 Emmy awards has come to an end. “Game of Thrones” has defeated “The Handmaid’s Tale” to earn the prize for outstanding drama series. The Hulu original series won the prize last year, but it didn’t have to go up against “Thrones” since the HBO fantasy epic took the year off.

In addition to “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Game of Thrones,” this year’s nominees for outstanding drama series included “This Is Us,” “Westworld,” “The Crown,” “The Americans,” and “Stranger Things.” “The Handmaid’s Tale” received a total number of 20 nominations this year. “Game of Thrones” earned 22 nominations.

“Thrones’” victory is a much-needed boost for HBO, which was overtaken by Netflix this year and lost its title as the most Emmy-nominated network. With Emmy darling “Veep” on hiatus and not in contention this year, it was up to “Thrones” to reclaim HBO’s Emmy dominance. The network had two of the most nominated series this year thanks to “Thrones” and “Westworld.”

“Thrones” will have more shot at the outstanding drama series category since its final season is expected to debut in the first half of 2019. The series has now won Emmy’s biggest dramatic prize three times.
