Karlie Kloss is one of the most famous supermodels in the world, but apparently even she’s had trouble booking jobs.
The model revealed to Vogue that when she gained weight as a side effect of birth control, she started getting dropped from gigs.
“I started taking birth control, and my body became more womanly — hips and thighs appeared,” she said. “I started losing jobs; I wasn’t getting booked for the runway; designers stopped working with me. It felt as if my world had been turned upside down.”
Karlie was discovered as a model when she was just 15 years old. She quickly blew up and became a runway favorite, and as she grew older, she felt pressure to stay the same size as her teenage self. But physical change was inevitable. As a side effect of the medication, the 26-year-old said she went from a size 0 to a size 4/6 in just six months. It was devasting for her at first, but over time, Karlie said she grew to accept her new body and focus on her passions.
“I’d always measured myself against Gisele [Bündchen],” she told the magazine. “To me, she was the pinnacle of modeling success, and that was not productive. That’s when I had a breakthrough: I realized it was time for me to do me, to embrace the things that make me who I am.”
Karlie then decided to enroll in NYU and take a coding class. There, she discovered she had a knack for computer programming. Fast forward to 2018, and she now has a nationwide program called “Kode with Klossy,” which helps teach 1,000 young girls in 25 cities how to code. Although she still models, Karlie said she wants to use her platform for the greater good.
“Before the dawning of social media, I think the role of the model was more to be seen,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to use my voice for positive impact. Now I can speak in real time.”
You go, girl!
